Some ghost towns aren't hidden in a forest — they're hidden underwater. For over a century, Carvins Cove was a fertile farming valley between the Brushy and Tinker Mountains, home to generations of the same families, with its own school, church, and town center. Then in the 1920s, the growing city of Roanoke needed water. Engineers realized the narrow gap at Carvins Cove was the perfect place to dam it. The city started buying out the valley — and families who refused to sell were forced out through eminent domain. Demolition crews came through in the early 1940s and cut down the orchards, burned the barns, leveled the houses, and tore down the church and school. In 1946, the dam gates closed and the water rose over everything that was left. Today Carvins Cove is a popular park for hiking and kayaking — but during severe droughts, when the reservoir drops low enough, the drowned valley starts to reappear: stone foundations, old bridge structures, even stretches of the original road, rising back out of the water they were buried under for a city's thirst.
