<video:description>Two 28-foot giant arrows stand buried deep in the Arizona desert dirt along an abandoned stretch of Route 66. Back in the 1950s, the Canyon Padre Trading Post planted these massive telephone-pole arrows to force cross-country drivers to slam on their brakes. It became a booming diner, gas station, and souvenir shop... until Interstate 40 bypassed it overnight. The trading post was abandoned in 1995, and in 2022, one of the original giant arrows collapsed into the sand. <video:title>What happens when the water dries up at Carvins Cove history virginia exploration</video:title>
<video:description>Some ghost towns arent hidden in a forest theyre hidden underwater. For over a century, Carvins Cove was a fertile farming valley between the Brushy and Tinker Mountains, home to generations of the same families, with its own school, church, and town center. Then in the 1920s, the growing city of Roanoke needed water. Engineers realized the narrow gap at Carvins Cove was the perfect place to dam it. The city started buying out the valley and families who refused to sell were forced out through eminent domain. Demolition crews came through in the early 1940s and cut down the orchards, burned the barns, leveled the houses, and tore down the church and school. In 1946, the dam gates closed and the water rose over everything that was left. Today Carvins Cove is a popular park for hiking and kayaking but during severe droughts, when the reservoir drops low enough, the drowned valley starts to reappear: stone foundations, old bridge structures, even stretches of the original road, rising back out of the water they were buried under for a citys thirst. <video:description>Deep in the forests of Virginia lies one of the most bizarre abandoned places in America: a fully paved, fully plumbed grid of empty streets with fire hydrants, sewer grates, and absolutely zero houses. This is the Elko Tract, a secret World War 2 decoy city built by the U.S. military to trick Nazi bombers. Decades later, a failed psychiatric asylum project left this phantom city completely abandoned to nature. Is this the strangest ghost town in Virginia history? <video:description>A cult took over a tiny Oregon towns government then carried out the largest bioterror attack in U.S. history to win a local election. In the early 1980s, followers of the Rajneesh movement built their own city from scratch near Antelope, Oregon complete with an airstrip, police force, and zip code. When they couldnt legally seize control, they took over the town council and renamed it Rajneesh. Then, in 1984, members deliberately contaminated salad bars at 10 restaurants in The Dalles with salmonella, sickening 751 people an attempt to keep voters home on election day. <video:title>A Shipwreck Built This Virginia Town A Hurricane Erased It shorts</video:title>
<video:description>On the southeastern edge of Virginia, in whats now False Cape State Park, sits a town born entirely out of disaster. In 1879, a ship called the Vandalia wrecked on a sandbar during a violent storm. The survivors dragged themselves onto the beach, looked around at the wild, isolated coastline, and decided to stay building their first houses out of the wrecks own timber. Within a few decades, Wash Woods grew into a self-sufficient village of over 300 fishermen and lifesavers, with a school, a post office, and two churches, completely cut off from the mainland by road. But the ocean that gave them their town eventually took it back. A string of hurricanes tore at the dunes protecting the village, salting the wells and flooding the houses, until the ChesapeakePotomac hurricane of 1933 finished the job. The storm surge made the land unlivable and families abandoned Wash Woods for good. Today the only way in is an eight-mile hike or a boat. Whats left is a brick church steeple standing completely alone in the woods, and beside it, a small cemetery where the descendants of shipwreck survivors are buried their names slowly disappearing into the sand. Part of the Forgotten Towns series abandoned places, lost communities, and settlements erased by time.
